Keeping it flexible

I have booked my flights, only 8 weeks and 2 days until I am on my way.

Thanks to my generous parents, I will be flying Business Class, enabling me to carry extra luggage.  Given that I am moving indefinitely, the extra baggage allowance will certainly assist me in over-packing.  I have a tendency to over-pack. I feel comforted in taking far more than I will need on most of my trips.  However, I have never tried to pack for forever before, I don’t know how I will manage to whittle down all my belongings into 30kgs of essentials.  No doubt I will entertain you with that challenge in about 7.5 weeks.

My most recent challenge has been keeping my plans flexible.

My original plan was to fly into Mumbai, stay with some family (or at least in the Asian way, meaning technically we are not related but we consider each other family) and spend a week or so getting myself over jet lag, get technologically established (ie. get a phone) and then work out whether I wanted to work straight away or travel for a while first.  My family friend was very helpful when I spoke to them a couple of months ago, and I was looking forward to spending sometime with him and his family.

Unfortunately, some dramas have unfolded in their family, which means its probably not the best time for visitors.  So I thought it would be best if I changed my plans.

I am more than happy to travel for a few months when I get to India and just enjoy my new country.  The only spanner in the works is my extra luggage.  My preference for backpacking is not congruent with carrying 30kgs (although last time I backpacked I did come home with 45kgs, but I nearly broke an arm trying to carry all that luggage on the Parisian Metro). Ideally, I would leave a bag with my family friend, but this didn’t seem like a real possibility anymore.

So I decided to go for Plan B.  I have a cousin in Vadodara in Gujarat.  Whilst it wasn’t high on my travel list, it would be nice to see family, and after reading up on Gujarat I got more excited about the thought of discovering the State more.

So instead of a flight to Mumbai, I now have a flight to Ahmedabad.

I will take a couple of days to catch up with friends in Singapore on the way, but then its straight onto Ahmedabad… and from there… who knows where I will end up.
